Empowerment and kids

Empowerment means different things to different people... it can mean equal opportunity, taking charge of your own life, or raising your consciousness and achieving greater awareness and mindfulness.

It usually reminds us of people in faraway lands who are oppressed and discriminated against. But people close to us can sometimes feel oppressed when they’re not heard, or when they're treated with disregard.

Unfortunately children are, in many instances, discounted and dismissed. One of the most oppressive expressions I’ve ever heard is “children should be seen and not heard.”

As parents we have the opportunity to empower our kids daily when we interact with them

  • By listening to them attentively
  • By asking for their opinions and thus having them participate in decisions
  • By teaching them new skills
  • By guiding them to find their own voices and to understand their own strengths
  • By helping them to set goals to pursue their dreams
  • By interacting with them in the same way we interact with our friends
  • By accept them for who they are without judgment
  • By acknowledging their person and their presence.

When you empower your children you give them the self confidence to make the right choices, and when you, as a parent, know that you’ve given your child the tools to make the right choices, you can confidently take time away from your them in order to grow in your own right.

We must trust in our ability to be the care givers and decision makers that our children deserve, and in order to do so we must be aware of our responsibility towards ourselves and our own lives before we can even pretend to be responsible for our children’s lives. We must develop self awareness and mindfulness in order to know our strengths and weaknesses, and be aware of who and what disempowers us. Once we’ve recognized how we actually allow external forces to control us and disempower us, only then can we reclaim our own power.

We’ve always been taught not to be selfish, and so we tend to think that we must sacrifice & think less of ourselves, and that we must put everyone else ahead of ourselves. This quote puts it all into perspective: “Humility does not mean thinking less of yourself, it means thinking of yourself less.”
